RE:SOUL 26 is back for April bringing more freshness to Leeds with another deep night of live jazz, soul and hip-hop music featuring the showcase set from the city’s finest rising talents plus the jam session with the sick house band and guests.
This time, we have a hip-hop special though we’ll still feature plenty of jazz and soul. Since day one back in May 2015, we’ve always had lots of MCs guesting with the house band. In the end, our music – jazz, funk, soul – is from the same tree but just different branches and the roots lead back to the same place…Africa. MCs are improvisers just like jazz musicians so it’s time to shine the spotlight on some of Leeds’ finest.
Our showcase will feature one crew who have been coming down to the jam since the end of last year and jumping on the mic with the house band. It’s time they take centre stage. We welcome That Good Collective, a young and vibrant crew of MCs, singers and producers. Artists still to be confirmed but hopefully they’ll include MCs Peculiar Dialect, Piko and JR plus soul singer
Monique and some more MCs and singers from the crew. Onstage 9pm. Get there early.
Special guest DJ for this session joining resident DJ Lubi (Soul Rebels) is hip-hop turntablist NikNak, one of the city’s finest new scratch DJs. She’s all over the city at venues like Headrow House, Belgrave Music Hall, Wharf Chambers and The Wardrobe at clubnights and warming-up for live shows. Not only a great hip-hop DJ, she smashes neo-soul as well as jazz and global beats.
The RE:SOUL band return for the jam session and as always, they’ll be laying down the nastiest and deepest soul, jazz and hip-hop beats for guests to jam on. They are Harry Fowler (tenor sax), Martin Longhawn (keys), Malik Morgan Murphy (bass), Joe Whettam (guitar) and Theo Goss (drums). Hit us an inbox email here on our page if you fancy jamming with them. The jam set will be posted in the the next few weeks by musical director Harry Fowler.
As always, resident DJ and host DJ Lubi (Soul Rebels Sessions/KMAH Radio) will keep things moving along nicely.
