Longtime Leeds Jazz/Soul/Global beats promoter DJ Lubi (Soul Rebels/RE:SOUL) teams up with local independent Jazz label Tight Lines for their first official co-promotion and it’s a cracker of a gig… An international jazz trio from Australia/New Zealand plus one of Leeds’ young rising Jazz stars in the city’s best underground live music venue. So much goodness for one night.

Direct from Australia/New Zealand/Los Angeles to Leeds are First Word Records’ contemporary Jazz group the Ross McHenry Trio featuring Ross McHenry on electric bass, Myele Manzanza on drums and Mark de Clive-Lowe on keys/electronics. It’s their first time in Leeds and one of only 2 exclusive UK shows (the other is London to celebrate First Word Records 14th birthday at Total Refreshment Centre). They’re coming up on this day straight from a live radio session for Gilles Peterson’s Worldwide FM. The trio dropped one of the best independent release Jazz albums of 2017 with “The Outsiders” for First Word Records.

As well as the trio, Ross leads Australian afro-jazz group the The Shaolin Afronauts and has worked with international Funk/Soul/Jazz musicians such as Eddie Bo, Marcus Strickland, Corey King and Marva Whitney. This is his second solo release for First Word Records (the debut album “Child Of Somebody” came out in 2016) and teams him with longtime musical collaborators Myele Manzanza and Mark de Clive Lowe.

Drummer Myele Manzanza has been a major force in the New Zealand Soul/Jazz scene since the mid-2000s, releasing his own solo albums on BBE and First Word Records and working as a sideman with Theo Parrish, Jordan Rakei, Amp Fiddler, Marcus Strickland and Miguel Atwood-Ferguson.

New Zealand keyboard maestro/producer Mark de Clive Lowe is well known to UK audiences through his music released now for almost 2 decades, having featured on over 300 releases. A master of both live improvisation and electronic beats, his music is the perfect 21st century fusion. He was resident in London 1998-2008 and a vital member of the thriving underground electronic/broken beats music scene as a musician, producer and remixer. In 2008 he moved to Los Angeles and since then he’s worked with the likes of Harvey Mason, Dwight Tribble, Miguel Atwood-Ferguson and Jean Grae, remixed music for legendary labels Blue Note Records and Fania Records and run his own ground breaking live music/electronic club night Church.

With these three Antipodean music masters on-stage together, you know it’s going to be something special.

Support comes from our very own Tight Lines Leeds artist, The Jasmine Whalley Quintet. With her Jazz/Hip-Hop quintet, Jasmine features original material played by herself and some of Leeds’ most exciting contemporary Jazz musicians.

With Ben Haskins on guitar (Têtes de Pois), Owen Burns on Bass (TDP,Garde Dog, Abstract Orchestra), George MacDonald on keys (TDP, Skwid Ink, FRANZ VON), George Hall on drums (TDP, Skwid Ink) and Jas (TDP) leading the ensemble, the quintet is an exciting blend of contemporary Jazz composition, a heavy dose of Hip Hop, and improvised sections which show off the group’s incredible knack for interplay.

Ones to watch in 2018.
