Soul Rebels 6th Birthday feat Kokoroko + Mamilah
Longtime Leeds jazz/funk/soul/global beats music promoter DJ Lubi launched Soul Rebels Sessions at The Wardrobe back in October 2012. The aim was to feature a night of live music that championed jazz, soul, funk, hip-hop, Latin, African and Brazilian music under one roof with a motto that said ”from Fela to Dilla and beyond”. It quickly became a hit and the go-to session for all in the city who loved these music genres, inspiring many copycat nights/sessions (a sign of a successful brand).
To celebrate this 6th anniversary, one of the hottest bands from the current UK jazz explosion visit our city for the first time. From London but now making waves worldwide, meet Kokoroko, an 8 piece afrobeat ensemble inspired by the music of Fela Kuti, Tony Allen, Orlando Julius and Femi Kuti and featuring some of the finest jazz and global beats musicians in the capital (including guitarist Oscar Jerome and drummer Eddie Hick).
Lead by trumpeter Sheila Morris-Gray, Kokoroko have been building up a strong following in London the last few years via their legendary live gigs. Their popularity is growing beyond the capital via their Boiler Room and Worldwide FM sets, gigs in Paris/Dublin/Italy and a track on this year’s hot London jazz compilation “We Out Here” on Gilles Peterson’s Brownswood Recordings. This summer, they play Gilles Peterson’s much loved “Worldwide Festival” in the south of France.
This is their first gig in Leeds and one of their first outside London. If you love afrobeat or afrojazz, you need to be at this show. Check them out at https://www.kokorokomusic.co.uk
Support comes from the rising stars of the Leeds jazz/ soul scene, Mamilah, another 8 piece band but this time drenched in the classic sounds of soul and funk. Formed at Leeds College Of Music in early 2017 by young musicians from across the UK and beyond, they skipped the popular modern sound of neo-soul loved by their contemporaries and reached back to the past masters and legends of the 1970s – Stevie Wonder, Aretha Franklin, Donny Hathaway, Minnie Ripperton and Roberta Flack. In singer Lydia Kotsirea, they truly have a future UK soul star in the making. A refreshing young band who insist on leaving the classics alone and performing and writing original material. DJs on the night are Soul Rebels resident DJs Lubi Jovanovic and Chris Welch. They’ll keep this 6th birthday party bouncing from start to finish with their blend of contemporary and classic jazz, soul, Latin, hiphop, Afro and Brazilian music.
