Soul Rebels Sessions finish off another great year (their sixth) with their annual Christmas party at The Wardrobe Leeds. Once again, they bring the city two new and exciting bands, one from London and one from Leeds, making some quality original music bringing together jazz, global beats and electronic music.
Cykada are an allstar band of young musicians from the vibrant London jazz underground featuring players from some of the top bands around today. Following in the footsteps of Yussef Dayes, Ezra Collective, Nubya Garcia, Maisha, Moses Boyd, Joe Armon Jones, they have built a strong reputation in London and with the release of their debut album in November on Astigmatic Records, they’re taking their sound and music UK wide with a mini-national tour to promote the LP. They produce 21st century fusion music where afrobeat meets spiritual jazz and L.A. style electronic beats. Imagine Fela Kuti and Pharoah Sanders jamming with Flying Lotus, NXWORRIES and MNDSGN. Check this live footage of the band tearing it up live at London’s Jazz Refreshed session :
The band’s musicians are :
James Mollison (Ezra Collective/Where Pathways Meet) – tenor sax
Axel Kaner-Lidstrom (Where Pathways Meet) – trumpet
Tom Doyle (Maisha/Don Kipper) – drums
Jamie Benzies (Don Kipper/Myriad Forest) – bass
Javi Perez (Undergrooveland) – guitar

Support comes from one of Leeds’ finest young musicians, another recent graduate of Leeds College Of Music and an amazing drummer, Tim Cook. He’s drummer with Leeds’ rising soul fusion/global jazz stars Necktr and also plays with Portuguese Brazilian music singer Sueli Gil and now he’s got his own band together playing original music. Welcome to Tim Cook & Friends. Featuring many well known faces on the Leeds jazz/global beats underground (including bandmates from Necktr), this 8 piece band bring a modern fresh take to Ghanaian high-life music and NIgerian afrobeat adding plenty of Latin and Brazilian rhythms plus a heavy dose of UK electronic vibes (garage. broken beats). So new, they don’t have a Facebook page yet so here’s an idea of what to expect :
DJ support as always from Soul Rebels Sessions DJs Lubi Jovanovic and Chris Welch, keeping the party rocking from start to finish with global soul and international jazz vibes, from Lagos to London, Havana to New York and all points between. Analogue and electronic, the sounds of jazz, deep soul, cool hip-hop, afrobeat, cumbia electronica, Brazilian grooves, reggae vibes, Latin rhythms and bad-ass boogie!
Another great year for DJ Lubi/Soul Rebels Sessions events, come down for some heavy deep music and early yule vibes for this last show of 2018 as we’re off for 2 months after it. More big thing to come in 2019. Thanks for all the support…..DJ Lubi
