As part of The Wardrobe’s 20th anniversary celebrations, Leeds salsa music pioneers and DJs Lubi Jovanovic and Chico Malo are resurrecting their legendary Casa Latina party at the venue for one night only on Friday 27th September.
Casa Latina ran every week from 1995-1999 at the much missed Underground club before relocating to The Wardrobe every Friday from September 1999 to February 2002. It was the first real and authentic weekly salsa party in the north of England and featured a full night of salsa dance classes, live bands and DJ sets. A proper New York style salsa clubnight in downtown Leeds. Bands, DJs and dance performers came from across the UK and further afield (New York, Los Angeles, Cuba, Puerto Rico, Colombia, Paris, Spain) and dancers came from all over the country to this weekly salsa/Latin party.
On Friday 27th September, we party like it’s 1999 again as the two original promoters/DJs reunite with their original salsa dance teacher to bring the night back for the first time in 17 years. Lubi and Chico will be joined by Colombian salsa dance teacher Tanya Cusan Espinosa, the first salsa dance teacher in Leeds/Yorkshire back in 1990, who will teach an improvers Cali-style salsa dance class. Special guest DJ and dance teacher is UK Latin star Mauricio Reyes from Birmingham’s Latin Motion promotions. As well as DJing he will teach a bachata dance class, the popular Dominican dance style currently huge in the salsa scene.
Finally, as Casa Latina always featured live bands, the only all-female salsa band in the UK, Guerrera, will be making their Leeds debut and playing their first show ever outside the capital. This exciting 10 piece band made up of Latina and UK musicians formed in summer 2019 features some of the top female musicians playing in the London salsa, jazz and world music scenes.
If you attended the Casa Latina sessions, or even if you didn’t, this one will be a great celebration of salsa/Latin/Cuban music, dance and culture not to be missed.
