After a successful series of COVID compliant/all seated/limited capacity shows October-December 2020 featuring local jazz heroes, Brudenell Social Club welcomes back longtime Leeds DJ/promoter Lubi Jovanovic with more of his Jazzland Sessions concerts. After the first tribute to legendary US modern jazz label Blue Note Records sold out in the autumn, there had to be another one. Here it is.
No matter how contemporary a jazz style today’s young musicians play, they always reference back for inspiration to the greatest modern jazz label of all time, Blue Note Records. This is the case for tonight’s headline band Another Workout. Band leader/guitarist Ben Haskins is a member of present-tense jazz crews Tetes de Pois, Jasmine, RE:SOUL house band, Franz Von band, Mystic Brew but he also loves legendary Blue Note Records 60s jazz guitar icons Grant Green and Kenny Burrell. So he got some mates together, named the band after a Hank Mobley album, picked a whole bunch of classic Blue Note 50s and 60s tracks to play and started gigging around Leeds’ jazz dives. If you love musicians from the label like Grant Green, Hank Mobley, Joe Henderson. Horace Silver, Herbie Hancock, Kenny Burrell, Wayne Shorter, Art Blakey, Sonny Clark and their music, then you’ll love Another Workout.
Another Workout are : Ben Haskins – guitar/leader, Ben Powling – tenor sax, George Macdonald – piano, Sam Jackson – double bass, Peter Udall – drums.
Support this time comes from one of the current young lions of jazz at Leeds Conservatoire and for sure a future UK jazz star in the making. Talking about trumpeter Grifton Forbes-Amos. London born and raised, he started playing trumpet aged 10 years old but happily confesses he didn’t really start to get heavily into it until he was 18 and when he hit Leeds College Of Music (now Leeds Conservatoire). Once in Leeds, he dived into the city’s vibrant DIY jazz/soul/global beats scenes with a passion. He joined global fusion/afro jazz crew TC & The Groove Family, abstract jazz crew Fall Quintet, Latin jazz band Punto Sabor and sat in at DJ Lubi’s jazz/hip-hop/soul jam session RE:SOUL. He also has a band in London called KOMA, has played live gigs in the “Black Peril” era ensemble of Soweto Kinch and recently guested with Tetes de Pois at the first Jazzland Sessions shows. And he’s still only 21!
For this second Blue Note Records Tribute at Jazzland Sessions, he’s paying homage to his favourite trumpeter and label legend Freddie Hubbard. His quintet (featuring great musicians from Leeds jazz bands Awen Ensemble, Yaatri, Stillwaters), will perform in full the whole 1961 album entitled “Ready For Freddie”, one of Grifton’s favourite LPs, plus a couple more Hubbard classics. Expect some firing hard bop, modal jazz and blues.
Grifton Forbes -Amos Quintet are : Grifton Forbes-Amos – trumpet/leader, Saul Duff – tenor saxophone, Vincent Kohm – piano, Joe Wilkes – bass, Eddie Bowes – drums
