Re:soul x Sunday Joint with New Position, Lizzie Berchie, DJ NikNak
Once again, we’re linking up with longtime Leeds jazz/soul/global beats DJ and promoter Lubi Jovanovic for another takeover of Sunday Joint for his RE:SOUL session. No jam session this one, just a showcase of some fine Leeds soul/jazz/hip-hop influenced bands alongside one of the city’s finest DJs.
Headliners New Position are the 9 piece band led by ace Belfast born/Leeds based guitarist Conall Mulvena aka KONL, and feature two of Leeds’ finest singers, Alice Higgins and Pariss Elektra. With top Leeds jazz/soul musicians completing the line up, you have a musical A-Team who bring the heaviest beats and grooves around today. Two musical influences stand out – Prince and Dilla – but New Position can easily drop into popcorn funk and leftfield pop with ease. Pure infectious dance grooves with a touch of humour.
Lizzie Berchie is one of Leeds College Of Music’s vocal stars today. She sings with bands like Project Hilts and Wise Willis but tonight she steps out front with her own band performing solo material bringing together soul, jazz, r’n’b and gospel. One to watch for 2020.
Keeping the flow nice and easy before and between sets is Leeds DJ NikNak playing chilled hip-hop/neo-soul/jazz-funk. With her weekly BBC Radio show “Backstage”, various clubnight sets, live turntablism for Necktr and festival appearances over the summer including “We Out Here” Festival, she’s one of Leeds’ most popular and busiest DJs today.
Following the live sets at 11pm is the legendary Sunday Joint club session which has run non-stop now for 25 years. The Sunday Joint resident DJs will take all those end-of-weekend party people on a funky journey though soul, hip-hop, reggae, funk, disco and global beats until the early hours of Monday.
