Headliners are Leeds global beats/Latin grooves/fusion jazz collective TC and The Groove Family led by Necktr drummer Tim Cook. Featuring musicians from some of the best bands in the city’s underground music scene (Necktr, Project Hilts, Long Legged Creatures, Fall Quintet), they can have anything from 10 to 16 musicians onstage when the core band are joined by guest vocalists, MCs and instrumentalists. Within 1 year, they’ve gone from high profile support shows with the likes of Yussef Dayes, KOG & The Zongo Brigade and Cykada to now headlining at The Wardrobe. The perfect rhythm, brass and beats combination to celebrate this Soul Rebels Sessions birthday by musically connecting Rio, Lagos, London, Havana and Leeds.
Support comes from PYJÆN (pronounced Pie-Jan), a London band that formed at Trinity Laban College Of Music and whose sound has many influences including afrobeat, hip-hop, rock, electronic music and jazz fusion. The quintet have been hitting major festivals this summer (Glastonbury, Manchester Jazz Festival, Love Supreme, Brainchild Festival) leading up to their debut album release this autumn. They represent the next wave of London young jazz rebels following in the footsteps of Moses Boyd, Ezra Collective, Theon Cross, Nubya Garcia, Joe Armon Jones and Yussef Dayes.
Openers are the latest Leeds College Of Music rising stars of neo-soul/hip-hop jazz The Space Antics. Already a hit at shows at RE:SOUL, The Wardrobe and Hifi Club, definitely ones to watch for the future.
Soul Rebels DJs Lubi Jovanovic and Chris Welch hold it down on the decks as always with a tasty mix of past, present and future jazz, deep soul, afrosounds, Latin beats, left-field hip-hop, Brazilian grooves and soulful electronica.
Soul Rebels launched at The Wardrobe Leeds in October 2012 with the aim of promoting jazz, underground soul, left-field hip-hop, Latin music and afrosounds together under one roof. From day one the bookings policy has been 50% national/international artists and 50% local musicians/bands, especially new young artists.
