Soul Rebels Sessions Present Live
NECKTR + B-Ahwe + The Space Antics
Saturday 27th April 2019
The Wardrobe Leeds
DJ Lubi’s final spring Soul Rebels Sessions show at The Wardrobe Leeds is another celebration of the vibrant local jazz/soul/global beats scene today featuring past and present bands/musicians from Leeds College Of Music.
Headliners Necktr stepped up from local band status to national touring band and festival regulars last year after their debut EP dropped and London’s Earth agency took them on. B-Ahwe are singer Beth Herrington and her band, who blend neo-soul, trip hop and hip-hop into a cool original vibe. The Space Antics are first year Leeds College Of Music students and play live hip-hop mixed with soul and jazz.
Necktr started life at Leeds College Of Music over 3 years ago and quickly established a local following with their gigs around the city as part of the Tight Lines collective. The 9 piece bring together their love of soul, jazz, afrobeat, Latin rhythms, hip-hop, electronic beats and folk under one roof, as shown on their recent debut EP release “Something’s Happening” on London’s Wormfood Records. In 2018, they completed their first self-organised UK tour and were picked up by Earth Agency’s Andre Marmot, who also manages Nubyian Twist. In 2019, their diary is full right up to the the summer festivals now and this is a rare hometown gig so not to be missed if you love that vibey jazz/soul/global beats fusion sound.
B-Ahwe are led by singer/musician/MC Bethany Herrington, another Leeds College Of Music star of recent times and a mainstay of the Leeds jazz/soul/hip-hop scene for the last few years. Featuring top musicians from the city, including two members of Necktr, they play groove-heavy soulful music with hip-hop vibes and beats topped off with Beth’s sweet voice. Her musical influences are old and new – from Sharon Jones to Lauren Hill and Jill Scott – pure class all the way. Great to finally feature her at a Soul Rebels Sessions show.
The Space Antics are future soul warriors of Leeds. Formed in Watford originally and moving to Leeds when the whole band became students at Leeds College Of Music in September 2018. They play original music that’s a fusion of neo-soul, jazz and hip-hop. Their debut single dropped January 2019 and a debut EP is coming in April 2019. Early doors set so get down to hear some future soul stars at the start of their musical journey.
Soul Rebels Sessions DJs Lubi & Chris spinning all the right jazz/soul/hip-hop/global beats tracks all night long, not necessarily in the right order. Great music past, present and future.
