DJ Lubi/Soul Rebels Sessions and Leeds International Festival present an evening of African and Brazilian music featuring two great bands from Leeds now making names for themselves across the UK.
Mansion Of Snakes are a 12 piece band heavy on horns, rhythm and percussion who play Nigerian afrobeat mixed with cosmic funk and heavy jazz solos. Inspired by music legends such as afrobeat founders Fela Kuti/Tony Allen, P.Funk dons Funkadelic and the master of spiritual jazz Pharaoh Sanders, they write and produce their own original material alongside band arrangements of selective Fela classics.
In spring 2017 they released their debut EP and and broke out from Leeds playing across the UK in London (Hootenanny, Magic Garden), Norwich (Arts Centre), Manchester (Matt & Phred’s), Bristol (The Canteen, Jam Jar), plus festivals including Shambala, Green Man, Smugglers and Kendal Calling. Tonight they’re launching a limited edition 7″ vinyl single on Come Play With Me Records out in April and available at their merchandise stall at this gig. Be prepared to dance your pants off….this music is infectious.
Opening act is Portuguese singer Sueli Gil and her 5 piece band who play a fusion of Brazilian music, Latin jazz and Angolan semba. Already singing professionally and releasing music back home in Portugal, she arrived in Leeds a few years ago and immediately put together a band and started gigging locally. Her favourite Brazilian music is from the 1960s/1970s, the sounds of MPB (Musica Popular Brasileira), samba rock and bossa nova. She is hugely influenced by Brazilian stars/legends like Elis Regina, Tom Jobim, Joyce, Marcos Valle, Caetano Veloso and Jorge Ben.
After playing locally at small venues, in 2017 she broke out to a wider audience with performances at big open air festivals VAMOS Leeds and Brazilica Liverpool. With a great band of some of Leeds’ finest young jazz/world music players from bands like Necktr/Mansion Of Snakes, an EP due in spring 2018 and gigs on the horizon across the north of England, Sueli Gil is stepping up to the next level. Get down early and catch her and the band live. It’s pure samba magic mixed with Latin jazz and a touch of Portuguese soul.
Soul Rebels Sessions DJs Lubi (Leeds’ original jazz/funk/Latin music legend) and Chris Welch (Sounds Like This, Sheffield) will be laying down the perfect mix of global sounds to keep the party rocking all night long as they have done at The Wardrobe for the past 6 years. Booty shaking Brazilian beats, Afro sounds, Latin rhythms, global soul and world jazz.
