SOUL REBELS FEAT. NUBIYAN TWIST & SKWID INK

Exactly one year since their last Leeds show, London afrobeat/reggae/soul/jazz collective Nubiyan Twist are back in the city and also back at The Wardrobe for the first time in 2 years. DJ Lubi (Soul Rebels) is hosting a Live At Leeds Festival warmup show at the venue to kick start the long bank holiday weekend. The band are promoting their latest Wormfood Records single “Dance Inna London” featuring reggae legend Super Cat, which drops in early April as a limited 12″ yellow vinyl release!

Nubiyan Twist were formed in 2011 at Leeds College Of Music by musicians who loved soul, funk, jazz, hip-hop, reggae, afrobeat and dub. Fronted by female singer/rapper Nubiya Brandon and under the musical direction of guitarist/producer Tom Excell, the 12 piece collective soon made a name for themselves locally and nationally, sharing stages/supporting the likes of De La Soul, Hot 8 Brass Band, Quantic, Robert Glasper, DJ Yoda, Gilles Peterson and DJ Vadim. Now mainly based in London and the South, they’ve proved to be a big hit at summer festivals, having smashed it at Soundwave Croatia, Shambala, Secret Garden Festival, Eden Festival, Green Man Festival, Meltdown Festival to name a few. After 2 single releases, their debut album came out in spring 2015 followed by an EP in summer 2016, all on Wormfood Records.

The second album is being cooked up in their Henwood Studios in Oxford right now but until that drops, this single should keep dancefloors bouncing over the summer. The 12″ release features the Supercat track on the A-side plus another Nubiyan Twist original, “All The Pieces”, on the B-side. Extra tracks come in the shape of a host of remixes from Dem JuJu Poets, Renegades Of Jazz, Wonky Logic and Voyeur. No doubt the band will have copies of this record plus previous singles, the album and other merchandise at this Leeds show.

Support band are leftfield jazz crew Skwid Ink, one of the many impressive bands coming out of the Tight Lines jam sessions and label. Guitar, keys, double bass and drums mixing up some sick beats, slick riffs and low end bass business. Get down early. These guys are well worth catching.

Soul Rebels DJs Lubi, Chris Welch and Danny Mager keep things moving along nice and steady with their freestyle blend of jazz, hip-hop, funk, Latin beats, electronica, reggae, afrobeat, soul, samba and global grooves. From Supercat to Thundercat, Dilla to Fela, Quantic to Questlove, cool sounds past, present and future for heads, hearts and feet. If you’ve been to any Soul Rebels/RE:SOUL Sessions nights before, you know the musical score….all killers, no fillers!
